The best childcare in the world? Maybe so, but new parents in Iceland are holding out for better.

Some are now calling for total leave for parents to be extended from 12 to 18 months so that they can cope with the lack of preschool places

This is the best possible way to address a shortage of daycare (which is what this really is).

Rather than trying to prop up an expensive industry of highly qualified staff so that parents can work more (to pay for even more expensive daycare), just enable parents to care for children without losing their jobs.

Of course, that doesn't drive the GDP up more, so hypercapitalist places like the USA will find that abhorrent. There's a blog post swimming in my head along the lines of "Mowing your own lawn is bad for the economy."

I've always found the idea of industrializing childcare to be a bit... well, industrial solution for an industrial society, where care isn't care but a service. But I don't know, I'm young and idealistic and don't have kids yet.

I hope to have kids someday, and my ideal situation would be to live in a co-op with other families where parents in the co-op rotate as daycare providers.

      • Cooperative living = slightly lower living costs = less work pressure = maybe opportunity to work part-time-ish?
      • Kids can develop long-term relationships with other adults
      • Kids can socialize with other kids

You could make a similar statement to how a society cares for the elderly. I understand that in the US it is widespread for the elderly to live in dedicated institutions, and I have no intention to criticize or get into a discussion here, but it is important to understand that in many cultures taking care of the elderly is primarily done by their children.
