Lol they think this is a Gen Z thing. That's cute. So did we, Gen Z. I still remember standing out waiting for the school bus listening to others my age freaking out about Halo 2's release date....

To the uninitiated, a kickback is the sophisticated Gen Z sweet spot between the lairy house parties of yore – the ones typified by vomit on the parental carpet and a trashing of the family bathroom – and a pre-teen sleepover.

“We hang out, we listen to music, make our own food, and play games,” she says. “We’ll probably organise it a couple of days before.”

“We’re quite different [from your generation] because there’s more stuff to do at each other’s houses and we have more technology – like, we have video games.”

So did we, Gen Z. I still remember standing out waiting for the school bus listening to others my age freaking out about Halo 2's release date. Even I and my broke-ass family had video games. Y'all motherfuckers probably haven't even been forged in the fires of four-player GoldenEye 007 or played Galaga for hours on end. I remember playing the demo disc of Legend of Legaia over and over again when I was only 6 or 7 years old, even though I had no idea what any of the buttons on the controller did at the time. Fight me.

But in all seriousness, Gen Z is basically Gen Y with more access to advanced technology and upbringings where inclusiveness is more of a social norm. Also, the benefit of not dealing with the fallout of the Great Recession during the years they're expected to be gaining job experience. Someday they're going to come to understand this and realize that we're really not as different as they think. Granted, there's definitely still a generational gap (seriously, sometimes I can't follow wtf Gen Z-ers are saying to save my life), but it's not like Gen Y is the antithesis to Gen Z.

That's not to say that we Gen Y-ers were any better, of course. Arrogance is the spice of youth ;)

Even so, it's good to see that they're energized and wanting to make positive changes. They'll mature a bit where it counts, but hopefully they don't lose that spirit. It makes me hopeful that they're directing their frustrations with how our society has failed them in a constructive manner.

It's aged very well, played through it again last year.
