This highlights the urgency by many start-ups to create synthetic meat (Impossible Burger/Beyond Burger/Finless Foods). I'm excited to see if they can have a lasting impact on our global food supply.

That's an interesting thought. Mine'a actually the opposite, that we need another source of protein, that's not meat. Though I won't lie, I'm really curious to see synthetic meat too.

There's a bit of confusion based on the terminology @dainumer used. Impossible Burger/Beyond Burger are not making "synthetic meat" i.e. lab grown meat. They're focusing on using plant and microbial ingredients to make the most convincing meat-substitute possible. Which I think is going to be the future of protein if we're being realistic long term about lab-grown meat and sustainability.

It looks like Finless Foods however is actually doing lab-grown fish. So that's pretty interesting.

That sounds super interesting. I know they do already mimic fish with tofu and such sometimes that are really convincing.

I feel like we'll see a shift towards more vegetarian-type meals overall, as time marches on. Completely anecdotally, based on no hard data, I've noticed that the people I associate with have been transitioning to a diet with far less meat. They all have their reasons (financial, ethical, health, etc), and degree of intensity, but overall they're shifting away from meat and animal products. If that is a trend which holds true as a generation, that's probably be a good thing.
I'm the most carnivorous of the bunch, and I rarely buy beef. Partially because I have better things to spend my money on, partially because beef is a fucking nightmare for the environment. The main protein sources among my pals and I are (in no particular order): chicken, legumes, soy, wheat gluten, and sushi, with the animal proteins on the lower-end of frequency. Things like beans seem like a good candidate for plant proteins that are workable with vertical farming.

I can see a shift to more veggie for sure. I already try to do it myself. Having meat on the plate is becoming less the default and more the "treat".

I think vertical urban farming is something we need to look more into. Growing crops along the side of a building would be a nicer view, but would be brutal for people with allergies.

I think the Impossible Burger company is still working on scaling up production enough to sell it to the public. Right now it's pretty much just select restaurants that use it.

I got it because I was curious. I'm not a vegetarian but do try and not have too much meat. It ended up really surprising me and tasted great.

It was like a really rare burger to me, I'd prefer it if it was more like a medium or medium rare texture, I'm sure they'll get there.

The Impossible Burger though...if I had been told it was a beef burger I would have honestly been fooled. Definitely give it a shot if there's any restaurant around that sells them (they're not available for consumers yet AFAIK)

The article and and radio broadcast themselves are a bit light, but the study itself is included in it: Global land use implications of dietary trends
