These people are obviously very mentally ill, and it's sad they weren't able to get help before this all happened. I find it way easier to be empathetic with them rather than the Columbine shooters, because these two didn't actually kill anyone. I wonder if it was possible to help them, or if they were just innately hateful people.

I don't think anyone is innately hateful. It has to start somewhere, usually at home. Both of these people likely had stuff happening between them and their parents. Gamble specifically wanted to target middle-aged Christian women, which is probably how he identifies his mother, while Souvannarath likely had something happening with her Laotian father and/or other minorities close to her. Over time, their lack of skills to deal with/ process their emotions forces them inward and in a feedback of self hate and resentment/anger for those around them. To have helped them would probably have required earlier intervention and lots of therapy for some trauma (perceived or real) that they have grudgingly built up for years.
