I did this in high school (in the 80s) doing assembly line work for a local electronics manufacturer in the MidWest. The adults there loved it. I was so-so on it. The work sucked, so doing more of it in a day was not fun at all. But the 3 day weekends were sweet.

I would definitely consider trying it at my current job. I would prefer the 4 8-hour days instead, though. I would probably actually get more done. At the least it would focus people and get them to spend less time in useless meetings, I think. I already spend a considerable amount of time waiting for things (waiting for a compile to finish, waiting for a build to download, waiting for QA to finish testing something, etc.).

One of my brothers had a job where they had "summer hours". You could work an extra hour every night (so a 9-hour work day) and either take a half day on each Friday, or take every-other-Friday off. It was a nice way to get some additional family time in during the summer when the kids are out of school.

I work a part-time 4-day week. Having a 3-day weekend is marvellous! I highly recommend it to everyone. As I like to describe it: one day for chores & errands, one day for fun & socialising, one day for rest & relaxation. It's brilliant. I feel so much more relaxed than when I worked a 5-day week.

And having that day off during the Mon-Fri work week is so helpful if you need to do something official, like banking, or legal stuff, or dealing with a government agency.

My direct manager also works a 4-day week, but she has a different day off than I do, so there's always one of us on duty every day from Monday to Friday.

    * Complaints about the schedule, my job has good and bad bits and I'm trying to angle for something better.

I just recently did 6 months working 8am-4pm, Monday through Friday, after spending my first 2 years on 12s, and I hated it. I chose the shift, wanted to see what working that sort of “9-5” type schedule felt like but come Wednesday, I was dragging.

I didn’t realize how much I’d grown accustomed to shift work and how valuable the extra days off were.

Now I work 4 days one week for 3 days off and 2.5 days the next for 4 days off. Much happier with this
