I was recently interested by the prospect of joining a social club as a way to meet new people in the city I recently moved to. I found myself also asking "What's the point?" and inevitably decided there was little reason to pursue joining because: A) I would need to have an "in", which is difficult if you don't know anyone in the area... B) it's extremely expensive to join some in the area, and the others are still fairly pricey, and C) most of the people that are members are at probably 15-20 years my senior, and that is not an age group that I am trying to make friends in. I don't really want political or business connections, just some new friends.

I have also looked at the alumni association chapter in my area, but it seems to be fairly quiet and mostly centered around watching sportsball, which I am not doing in a group right now.
