    This reminds me of where I grew up in rural Indiana. Especially the bit about students being able to opt out.

    After being taught creationism in school, I asked if we were going to do another unit on evolution. The teacher eventually relented (after complaining that she’d have to go to the county library to find relevant material), but students were allowed to opt out that day.

      I'm guessing it was more of a pre-emptive move against any sort of practice that could vaguely be described as "new age" or "the Devil's work." They probably didn't scrutinize each item too much.
