Last year, three "seasteading" enthusiasts bought a cruise ship to use as the core of a libertarian cryptocurrency utopia off Panama's coast. The plan fell apart before it made it across the ocean.

The problem appears evident: Aligning themselves so closely with cryptocurrency, not outlining the benefits, and only working among themselves to try to get people on board. If (and when) an endeavor ultimately succeeds they will need a group that determines the overall governance of the project and creates and shares something that creates external economic value, such as manufacturing, services, or (definitely) both.

The problem with the Seasteading Institute is simple: they haven't outlined colonial goals of governance, and they haven't worked towards a way of external funding through trade. With technology where it is, the possibility of automation of mindless and repetitive tasks, and the surplus of communication for marketing and sales, there should be nothing stopping from the Seasteading Institute from implementing a water-breaking development. But, they stop short of any long term aspirations as they are attempting to drown themselves in 'libertarian' politics and a anarchic society. If they would just set themselves up with a structure, goals, mission, and be as technologically focused as they want to be - maybe, just maybe, they would be building real communities and not 'SeaPods' that are just weekend getaways for the wealthy tourists of the world.

I think the goal was simply to generate economic value through crypto mining and entrepreneurship, and to be completely free to do so, and I guess whatever else they wanted to do, within the confines of their cruise ship cabin, and according to the rules of the community (lol).

I agree with you, and it smacks like another venture that was posted here (It was pods, but off of another country, I think?), it's all ideology with little governance.
