I’m fed up with people being killed because my profession contains a bunch of dogmatic idiots. I’m sure the response of some will be: But Chuck, the driver was drunk, this isn’t the engineer’s fault. Ridiculous. If I had a $100 for every time I heard an engineer recommend some stupid tree removal or curve widening because “some drunk is going to come through here and get killed” I would be fully funding Strong Towns with the interest off my latent wealth. We consider the drunk when it suits our purposes -- the free flow of traffic -- and ignore them when it doesn't. That's the sign of a broken moral compass.

We need to seriously redesign roads so that the average person does not feel safe driving any faster than the listed speed limit. Rather than building a freeway and limiting it to a residential street speed and then fining everyone who drives to the design of the road.

Wide residential streets are great for kids to play in, at least in a world where we lack easy access to quality parks. Idiots driving 45+ on them not so much. I'm very much in favor of 25mph...

Idiots driving 45+ on them not so much. I'm very much in favor of 25mph rated speed bumps every 200 feet or so in residential areas. I'll celebrate every time I hear a BMW bottoming out.

Our street got speed bumps a few years ago. It’s so much more pleasant to go on walks.
