    Intriguing article. Provides some real food for thought, especially with the evidence that he sets forth, much of which I haven't come across before.

    Based on his closing statements, especially "What kind of society does “America” mean?", I think I'm going to have to make sure to follow his work over the next few months. A well-thought out and well-written response to that question would be very interesting to read and discuss.

    It's an interesting thought that countries and cultures have deep historical flaws that cause dysfunction that are puzzling to outsiders - just as individuals have deep flaws due to their DNA or upbringing/environment. The US for example has racism, inequality and gun worship baked into the country's "historical DNA" that makes not only solutions but rational discussion of the problems impossible. Other countries have different dysfunctions such as the British class system or Russian love of authoritarianism.
