I think an important thing to remain constantly aware of is that extremism/moderatism is not a purely lateral. Centrists can be extremists. Centrists can fall into the same tribalistic pitfalls and toxic attitudes as anyone else wherever on the political spectrum. One's position on the X axis isn't necessarily indicative of how fervent or radical they are in the application of those beliefs.

Absolutely; horseshoe theory is a bit inadequate of a model - and while the video does seem to argue extremism is a problem only for anyone who isn't a centrist, I don't think it's the main case...

Absolutely; horseshoe theory is a bit inadequate of a model - and while the video does seem to argue extremism is a problem only for anyone who isn't a centrist, I don't think it's the main case being made - just that there is a danger of extremism and it can exist on one's own team the same as it does for the other side(s).

I like styxhexenhammer666's cone theory, where the narrow end of the cone is anarchy and the wide end is authoritarianism, and all around the sides along that spectrum are different political/economic ideologies.

Thanks for posting the styxhexenhammer link. This is the first I’ve heard of him and his cone theory. He’s got a number of solid and sensible points (that he explains really well) in the video....

Thanks for posting the styxhexenhammer link. This is the first I’ve heard of him and his cone theory. He’s got a number of solid and sensible points (that he explains really well) in the video. Part of the reason I’m excited for tildes is to get the vitriol out of the way of political enlightenment - that is not to say styx’s views are IT for being enlightened, but more to say that the more quality viewpoints I can integrate into my own evolving political ideation, the better. I’m happy.

Autoplay happened to spit out this video immediately afterwards where John Cleese also happens to say of Trump voters "These are the stupidest people you have ever met". So, yes. Be a centrist....

So, yes. Be a centrist. Not an extremist. I think Cleese makes it very clear what he considers to be extreme behaviour and what he considers to be sensible behaviour looking at the issue, the evidence, and following fact-based science.

Even Python would struggle to make fun of the modern day because some of the absurdity they might portray in one sketch could actually possibly come true the following day.

Interesting! This is one that popped up for me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAK0KXEpF8U where he lays out criticisms of the political correctness people.
