I really enjoyed Steven's toastmasters speech here because it crystallizes into words exactly what about the "intellectual dark web" I find nauseating. The "dark web" connotes hidden and arcane, perhaps sinister or taboo, or maybe even merely not household names. There are many intelligent people on the internet who don't have the platform they deserve, and there are people who are on the actual fringes of the overton window on the internet, and then there's the actual dark web (e.g. not on the main DNS system, tor/freenet/ipfs/etc. sites) where extremism of various kinds and criminality probably have prominent thinkers.
