I like O'Rourke's style and politics, but I'm suspicious of putting another charismatic populist who lacks substantive, relevant experience, in charge of a nation. History tells us that even the most brilliant, talented-but-inexperienced person can't overcome the challenges, or will make mistakes that have dire consequences. Barack Obama's major fault was that he had to rely too much on the advice of insiders while learning the ropes.

I'm delighted O'Rourke is running for Senate, and if he has a successful term, wouldn't mind a well-prepared presidential run.

As to the 2020 U.S. presidential race, a candidate with more experience in policy, or running a complex, multi-level bureaucracy, like a large-city mayor or state governor, would be better for the country.

One of the worst failings of the Democratic Party is that it's failed to cultivate a deep bench of good candidates, starting at all levels of government. It's expended way too much on the high-profile races, and too little at the grassroots. There's been no effort to groom and train young pols or evolve policy through competition in every district, including the "red" ones. I blame over-reliance on pollsters and consultants.

I sincerely hope Beto O'Rourke is not the most progressive candidate the DNC is willing to field. His voting record is moderate and uninspiring.

He supports universal healthcare but has been critical of the Medicare for All bill in addition to wanting to"stabilize insurance markets to help ACA". That's not progressive.

He's part of the New Democrat Coalition which is self described a group who support an agenda that the organization describes as "moderate" and "pro-growth", support a balanced budget.

This is all standard neoliberal policy. His is not a leftist, and only a progressive relative to Republicans and the center-right parts of the Democratic policy. His campaign promises are basically the same as Clinton's in the 2016 election. Maybe its fair to compare him to Obama, who was also a neoliberal who used progressive rhetoric to win. What worries me is something like DNC favoring O'Rourke to prevent a more progressive candidate from truly shaking things up.

I’m sure Beto’s a nice guy and he’s exciting a state’s democrats who aren’t used to feeling like their candidate has a shot. But we’ve been down this path in Texas before. Wendy Davis might have a few notes.

I hope he’s just being glib about not even wanting good data, because get out the vote efforts and the core mechanics of a campaign do benefit from guidance, unless you have a ton of money.

I don’t do wishful thinking generally, and I end up resenting articles that try to make me. This is one such hype article. I’ll pass.
