Its risky to outright copy a design. I don't suspect that Irgit thought her bikini would blow up like that. The way I see it, it comes down to 'imitation vs inspiration' or 'good artists copy, great artists steal', (not literally steal -- but to be heavily inspired by a design.)

Since Irgit went down the lesser road, she should have tried to bring Ferrarini into the fold as soon as things started taking off, no matter how uncomfortable that conversation would be

Had Irgit simply been inspired, she could have told the press about the fantastic bikini she bought in Brazil, etc etc, instead of making up stories about her mother and grandmother making the same bikini as a kid. Further, going after other big names in the industry only increases the odds of someone sorting out the source of your design. Bad moves all around.

When I first started dating the woman who would become my ex-wife, she had a similar crochet bikini that she had made herself. It was a pattern that she bought at a store. The detail wasn't the same, but the structure seems to be identical to this. It looked great and held up for many summers.

All in all, if you want to produce something that someone else is already making on a low level (e.g. street vendor, crafter), hire them, be inspired by them, or make something totally new.
