Do you have any sources that, unlike BuzzFeed, are actually respectable?

BuzzFeed News is distinct from BuzzFeed, and has often been linked here.

It is not very aptly named considering BuzzFeed's normal content, I was kinda confused too for the first time. This comes up pretty much every time they're posted though, haha.

this is a very non-productive comment on a lot of levels, and i would politely encourage you to not post anything of this sort in the future because this is not what tildes is about. if you have issues with the validity of source, a better course of action in the future would be to present why you take issue with its reporting and what leads you to believe it may not be reputable--or, alternatively, why you think they got the reporting wrong here. instead, you firstly have demonstrated here that you don't even know the well documented difference between buzzfeed's main site and their news site, which is a distinct entity that has been repeatedly commended for its longform pieces and investigative journalism work in the vein of pieces like this, and secondly made yourself look like kind of an ass by trying to score a gotcha on a piece about date rape and how almost everything surrounding prosecuting it is hot garbage.

There are nicer/more polite ways to say what you just did as well, without the need for including a personal attack... See deing's comment above.

Yes, that part might be worded a bit differently too. I think it is fair to point out the differences, but the way it was done was a bit crass and not really giving the poster a benefit of the doubt.

However even "you firstly have demonstrated here that you don't even know the well documented difference between buzzfeed's main site and their news site" is a pretty condescending way of putting it.

however, knowing the difference between these two things takes literally one google search. buzzfeed news is the third result when you search up "buzzfeed". this took me around three seconds to find out (with scrolling) with said google search. i'm willing to entertain the idea that some people just don't know, but we're also not talking something that's buried in pages of nonsense here like is true of some things, and this is also a website that prioritizes a little bit more than "this is bad just because i don't like it" in commenting.

if you're going to try and impugn a website's credibility on here but can't even bother to do the basic research necessary to realize that buzzfeed and buzzfeed news are distinct entities, i'm personally not going to mince my words in calling that out even if it comes off as condescending sometimes.

That seems a logical fallacy of sorts. You're treating your already gained knowledge as if what you know should be obvious to everyone and easy to discover if not, when it is not and may not be (you can't google for specific knowledge you don't know you lack!). And in this particular case that's made especially problematic because of both organizations using the same Buzzfeed name, despite having such wildly different standards for journalistic integrity, editorial oversight and material quality... so is it really any wonder that people might automatically assume Buzzfeed News puts out the same clickbait bullshit as their parent organization? I don't think so, and so would rather not hold that mistaken impression against someone.

I'm not really meaning to imply one way or anther whether the thought is warranted. I'm more interested in how to best approach someone is all. Using language like that is more likely to put someone on the defensive and be less willing to engage for better understanding.

In an ideal world, would everyone try running a web search and doing a bit of reading before making remarks like they did? Yes. It's not practical to expect that's going to happen in every case though, and if they have preconceived notions in their mind of what something is already, they're less likely to go out searching for a rebuttal to their existing way of thinking on their own.

Opportunities like this could be used for more productive means in trying to shape their opinions by pointing out something they may not have otherwise sought out for their own sake. I think it is a fair to rely on heuristics and become wary when comments like their's are made, but is your reaction doing more to shift their leaning or to just make them dig their heels into the dirt more?

I do think that in a very different context (i.e. a BuzzFeed News article which serves as propaganda for the American war machine) OP's post verbatim mocking the reliability and respectability of BuzzFeed (regardless of whether it's published by the division of the company that specializes in news or the one that specializes in cat GIFs) would be a warranted and constructive comment.
