    Huh.

So, I'm cool with mental health awareness being a thing that society pushes. I'm OK with private and public institutions spreading the message. I think I'm not OK with mental health awareness being a marketing tactic. Using a serious health condition that's linked to harm and discrimination in order to sell more food seems to me to be, well, kind of obscene.

In Canada, we have to deal with this on an annual basis with the "Bell Let's Talk" day, which is basically a media company donating a pittance to mental health causes, and getting free advertising for almost an entire week surrounding it. It's largely viewed as hypocritical because Bell's own policy for employees' mental health is/was lacking at best and actively hostile at worst.

At face value, the ad looks alright, but then you get to the meals and the tweets and it feels like everything falls apart. The names of some of these "meals" are absolutely ridiculous and scream "How do you do, fellow kids?" Plus, it's rather hard to take a "feel better" tweet seriously when it has to end with a marketing hashtag.

This just reads to me like Vox is mad that a fast food company wanted to raise mental health awareness.

That's cynical. They want to sell hamburgers while also raising mental health awareness. Though I agree that the execution is rather poor.

...but presumably, the only reason they're supporting mental health awareness is because (when all is said and done) they are making money as a part of raising awareness, and if they weren't, they presumably would not have the mental health tie in here. so it's cynical, but what they're doing is also probably cynical to begin with.

If they really care about mental health, then why aren't they donating, or at least encouraging people to donate to organizations that help with mental health issues?

Marketers are not mustasche twirling cartoon villains, out to exploit every angle to make a quick buck.

At least, the ones good at their jobs arent, because its self defeating.

They had a job and tried to do some good along the way instead of spending time on unmemorable markeitng campaign #4573.

IMHO if Burger King and the like wants to do something positive for health they should start with stopping their operations and closing all their restaurants. The "food" these companies sell is a worldwide public health issue in and of itself.

As someone with mental health issues I'll take the wins where I can get them.
