    I enjoyed this story and I'm suddenly wondering about all the boats cruising around, how easy it would be to move around relatively unimpeded.

    He also told me he gave Quinci refuge out kindness and that there was no deal or plan with the Italian. “He didn’t pay me nothing!” he said. “I’m a good guy, I was raised with values.”

    I wonder how much he knew of Quinci's story when he first saw him? Being such a small island and closely knit community. I doubt my immediate reaction to the arrival of an escaped convict would be "I'm a decent person, I'll hide and take care of him.".

    Seems likely Couto isn't a white knight but is probably involved, not directly with Quinci but it seems likely he's benefited from the cocaine.
