I'm also generally skeptical of blockchain hype which often seems to be implemented in detriment to the actual function of the software it's attached to.

However as the website states; it would provide some transparency to data manipulation.

A recent article posted here described a restaurant owner's accusations that yelp maintains a racket by threatening to manipulate reviews. This type of intimidation could be prevented with a open blockchain.

However the more pressing and veritably true problem of fake reviews is not addressed by blockchain technology to my knowledge and may even been worsened as fake reviews cannot be deleted in the absence of a central authority.

Another website posted here, lib.reviews uses the centralisation approach and has maintained a very high quality standard for reviews. However it remains to be seen if it could retain that standard if it were to gain popularity.
