Our current government is doing several of these high-profile prestige road projects, but they're expensive, and partly financed by toll booths, which is wildly unpopular. It doesn't help that one of the ruling parties (the right-wing populist Progress Party) did a strong election 6 years ago on a campaign promise to tear down every toll booth in Norway. We're having local elections in September, and a new political party with a name that roughly translates to "The Popular Campaign No to More Toll Roads" looks to achieve a stunning result, possibly ending up as the largest party in our second largest city Bergen. Depending on the results in September, I could see the coalition parties scale back on road projects that are currently in the planning stage, such as this one, for fear of similar results in the national election in 2021.
