This stuff is interesting, but I can't help but think that in the past few years, the intense focus on voting data, and general strategy has started to overshadow the entire reason we do this stupid charade every couple of years: policy. It seems like so, so many resources get devoted to discussing hypothetical voting patterns, spoiler effects, electability, and other factors in the 'sport' of politics, that fewer and fewer of them actually talk about policy proposals and how they would affect our lives with meaningful data.
Even when there's a new scandal, the first discussion is usually "well how will this affect voter preferences", rather than "Is this actually bad thing for our country, and if so, why."

    I don't know, maybe it's just me.

It is truly telling that few politicians are unwilling to discuss their true policy goals and are constantly focusing attention back on their opposition. Many social issues get thrown out there as a way to appeal to peoples emotional preferences, but we rarely hear what the true goal will be. This new type of meta analysis comes from the prevalence of the modern 24 hr news cycle and the constant search for more clickbait content in order to drive 'engagement'. It isn't just you, politics has become a complete shitshow for a number of reasons, mostly because its a topic that drives traffic to online and television. advertising

Nutshell tl;dr ... yet another thing we didn't know about polling, that can throw them off and maybe, you know, surprise everyone come election-time.
