I don’t see the point in banning Diesel or petrol cars because electric ones have to get the electricity from somewhere until all the electricity is clean no point

Nah, electric cars are less polluting and more efficient than ICE cars even if you're getting most of your energy from fossil fuels. I have a detailed breakdown in a thread we had here a while...

Nah, electric cars are less polluting and more efficient than ICE cars even if you're getting most of your energy from fossil fuels. I have a detailed breakdown in a thread we had here a while ago, but the gist of it is that fossil fuel based power plants are more than twice as efficient as car engines, because of benefits from scaling and higher-temperature operation, and electric cars are somewhere around 80% efficient at using that power, so they come out ahead. (For reference, electric cars get around 100-120MPG equivalent)

The reality though, is that plenty of countries have loads of renewables and carbon-free energy in the mix, so electric cars are often better still. And even if electric cars were currently no better on emissions than gas cars, it'd still be a good idea to switch to them, since it makes pollution more centralized and manageable, and electrification of transportation can be done by simply replacing a power plant.
