Scott Morrison is now very popular in Australia. He hasn’t earned that.

He could have handled this problem badly - but he didn't. He could have been a Boris Johnson or a Donald Trump - but he wasn't.

A true leader should not need to be poked into action by health professionals, regional leaders or even a terrified public.

Even with those groups agitating for action, some leaders still aren't listening. Scott Morrison might have had to be poked into action, but at least he was poked into action. He listened to the experts. He listened to the premiers. And he took their feedback on board. And he changed course accordingly. And he has stayed the course. Even though all his personal instincts and political ideologies were screaming in protest, he did what had to be done. He spent money. He locked the country down.

Let's not forget that he created the national cabinet, so that Premiers and Chief Ministers could talk to him, contradict him, and poke him into action.

Yes, it's a low bar. Yes, this should be business as usual. But when you look around the world, Australia has (so far!) come out better than most countries. Under another leader (take your pick), that might not have happened. But it has happened, and Scott Morrison deserves at some of the credit for that - even if all he did was listen to the experts and do their bidding. Some leaders around the world haven't even done that.

    I'll give him this one.
