Man, this story is wild, and brings back memories of a much younger, more community focused internet. While the article cites Munchhausen's by internet being a growing trend, I definitely saw my lion's share of it in the mid 2000's in the Atheist/ScienceBlogs community, where this whole ordeal with fake people who exist for the aggrandizement of others happened 3 or 4 times. They inevitably got seriously sick or died, or something, never vanished without a trace. Very strange to see a resurgence of that sort of thing.
