It still blows my mind that the US Capitol Police just completely failed to listen to the intelligence about this attack just because they were a bunch of white terrorists rather than peaceful BIPOC protestors

I have been awakening to just how bad racism really is in this country.

I was raised, admirably, to judge people on their actions, rather than their appearance. A limitation of this upbringing is that it was accompanied by a fairly narrow band of acceptable behavior. An unfortunate side effect of this raising is that it completely ignored the links between people's experiences and their actions. Even when people acted according to the right code, so to speak, it did not give credit for their having to have made twice the effort to get there.

Now, whenever I meet people of color who are similar to my "status" or "level" however that may be defined in the moment, I try to remember that they are likely twice the person I will ever be in terms of their character, intelligence, and dedication.
