The only Baz Luhrmann movie I’ve ever seen is Moulin Rouge! which I didn’t really care for. The editing was way too hyper for me, and I was honestly kind of a bit bored with the spectacle of it all. It’s crazy to me that that was a Best Picture nominee in an era when only five movies had the honor. Nicole Kidman was great in it though.

Since then Luhrmann has lost a lot of goodwill with critics and the industry. So I’m fascinated to see how this will be received. Online reactions to the trailer have been negative.

I don't know what the other reactions have been and I'll admit to knowing near nothing about Elvis' personal life, upbringing, history, etc. just aware of his music and the frequently stated white man that got famous off black music and moves. This trailer does look like there's a lot of (possibly false/imagined?) whitewashing of where his influences came from and how he reconciled with it.

I loved Moulin Rouge and very much enjoyed The Great Gatsby. I'm not an Elvis fan by any means, but I'd be willing to watch this. I'd be lying if I said I didn't like the flashiness, gaudiness,...

I have an expression for movies like Moulin Rouge: they're "Christmas three movies", so full of trinkets that they feel like a prolonged seizure.
