I don’t usually post weekend to weekend box office numbers here. But I thought it was notable since Lightyear, the first Pixar movie to be in theaters since Onward, is a box office bomb. Couldn’t even beat the week old Jurassic World for the number 1 spot.

I saw the movie, I actually liked it a lot more than Onward and Luca, but the critical and audience reception were both mixed. And I don’t mean the review bombing that’s been going on. I think audiences didn’t really care about a Toy Story spin-off even if they like Toy Story (echoing the box office failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story). The premise of the film was poorly communicated, and honestly a little hard to explain. Plus Pixar being sent to Disney+ for the past three movies has been damaging to the brand, now some people decide to wait at home for their Pixar films. And now Minions: The Rise of Gru is likely going to do double what Lightyear will make.

Disney should have put Turning Red in theaters. That could have been an Inside Out type of hit. And it would have offset how badly Lightyear is bombing.

In positive news, this is the first weekend since 2013 to have three movies gross over 40 million dollars in one weekend.

I have to be perfectly honest, having only known of Lightyear's existence from Youtube ads, I thought it was going to a show and it never even occurred to me that it was a movie.
