Minions shocked everyone by opening with a three day weekend total of 108 million, making it only the 6th movie of the pandemic to open above 100 million, and the first animated film to open above 100 million since Frozen II back in 2019. It doubled Lightyear’s opening weekend (of which Minions has less than half the budget). Quite the impressive opening in the billion dollar franchise (yes Minions and Despicable Me 3 made a billion dollars each) and this looks like it’ll reach the same milestone.

Also, I wanted to point out the TikTok trend that’s been happening with this movie. A bunch of older teens and early 20-somethings who grew up with this franchise (as I did) showed up to this movie wearing a bunch of suits. Memeing it up. Which actually seems to have contributed to its success. The 17-25 male demo was a lot higher than expected. If you ask me the “ironic” meme thing that they were doing was just an excuse to watch a kids movie that they’re perhaps a little too old to want to see.

Ah, so basically what happened with Morbius, except this time people did want to see it, unlike with the vampire dumpsterfire where it really was just ironic.

imo Minions is a terrible franchise, they should stop making minions films already.

Here's the thing, it's not for you and nobody's forcing you to watch it. It's for children, like entirely. They throw in some tame adult humor here and there to keep the parents from gouging their eyes out, but it's absolutely for children. And children love it. My 3yo twins are freaking obsessed. I've watch the first Minions movie about three dozen times at least. It's on right now in the other room, in fact. God help me.

I really enjoyed Despicable Me, but haven't really enjoyed anything that came after it. That being said, I'll probably end up taking my kids to see it in a week or two once we can get a nearly empty theater to ourselves since it'll be their first movie. But again, it's not for me. It's not for you, it's really not for any adult. Some adults like it, but I am not one of them and neither are you. And that's okay.

I'm sorry you've been kidnapped and are being forced to watch Minions movies, that's terrible! Should we call the police? /s Seriously though, they aren't for you. Don't watch them and try not to...

Seriously though, they aren't for you. Don't watch them and try not to get worked up about people making stuff that you don't like. You'll feel better in the long run.
