I saw the movie and have mixed opinions on it. It's definitely way too long, and there is a bit in the middle when the ship goes down that is just disgusting in both the figurative and literal meaning of the word, as it handwaves an excuse into the plot to make everybody sea-sick and it's basically a solid (feels like) 10min montage of people violently puking and shitting everywhere as they struggle to reach the toilets, the toilets explode and flow over, and the shit water just flows fucking everywhere. It's not great. Only one little scene in that montage at least attempts to be funny.

I understand that this is an arthouse film, and for many of such films, you need to kind of look for the bigger picture sometimes and overlook some things nitpicky critics like to call plot holes. But the problem is that the entire point of the movie becomes extremely clear from the first scene on the island, and it feels like a puzzle video game where you've solved the puzzle, but can't execute the solution yet. You're off the ride mentally because you care for none of these characters because the movie has explicitly made them all out to be cunts, but you have to finish watching.

I don't want to spoil anything, but if you read the premise of the movie, it should be fairly clear what the message is going to be. There are a couple of good scenes in the movie, I think the start is good but the problem is that it focuses heavily on two characters at the start and then just kinda forgets that they've been established as the main characters.

This is basically Don’t Look Up but for the art-house crowd. I have really no idea why Europeans are loving it so much though, giving it the Palme over the much better Decision to Leave and Close...

Östlund once said that he likes to portray characters who have to save face - wonder if that's the case with 'Triangle of Sadness'. I haven't seen it yet and I missed the short-run festival release in my country (was too paranoid about Covid-19 at the time!). In the interim, I've been watching some of his notable movies on recommendation from a friend. I adored 'The Square', while 'Force Majeure' was also pretty good. In both there were some brilliant scenes which for me brought out the power of cinema by inducing a very visceral response that I find is quite rare these days. Does anyone have any further recommendations for his filmography?
