Jumping off from a discussion we had a few months ago.
I actually had a small interaction with one of the Daniels over six years ago now. When I was 16 and I had just seen Swiss Army Man in theaters. I tweeted at them my letterboxd 5/5 review and, I forgot which one, liked the tweet and replied a thank you. So they’re very nice guys, and they’re filmmakers who I really like even if I didn’t care for EEAAO that much.
The fans of the film, at the very least the ones doing all this, are the most annoying group of fans I have encountered throughout all my years following awards season. It’s like they start foaming at the mouth whenever someone doesn’t think it’s one of the best movies ever made.
I feel that society in general is doing a rather poor job of drawing the line between interest and obsession. And it hasn’t for a long time. I don’t even remember the last time I saw the word “fanatic” being used pejoratively.
