The first one didn't have much of a story, but this one did, and the graphics were truly astounding. I am more excited for the third movie than any other film announced at this point.
The focus of environmentalism in these films is really the effect Cameron is trying to leave on people, not necessarily the story, and some of those scenes were absolutely gut wrenching.
I mean, I didn’t particularly like the movie. I knew I wouldn’t. But I still went to watch it because I knew it would be pretty. I imagine many people are in my situation.

Exactly my position, went with my girlfriend that really liked the first one and we went to an IMAX screening which we never do because we knew this movie would be worth it in IMAX. I think it's...

I think it's just an easy movie to get into. The fact that the story and themes are really simple and it has something that appeals to everyone (action, romance, family, incredible scenery) just makes this movie really easy to watch for any audience member.
I wouldn't call it my movie of the year but given it's success it's clear to me that Cameron wants to make something that can appeal to the most number of people and spread his easy to follow environmental message and not he isn't trying to wow film critics or win any accolade that isn't special effects.

Looks pretty, action-packed, 'exotic'... I'm not sure there's anything more to 'get' for the generic movie-goer.
This is gonna hit well over 2 billion fyi
