Hollywood cannot survive without movie theaters. Why is this so hard for studios to believe?

They need to adapt to the new reality that most movies aren't enhanced by being on the big screen and that people are content to see them on their television at home. In fact, the theater experience is demonstrably worse in significant ways.

The fact that I left the house, paid a ticket, and entered a room specifically designed for viewing movies puts me in a different appreciation mood that is not broken by my dog barking at a cat, my partner asking for help with something, or my own lack of self-control. In the theater, I can't pause a movie to go the bathroom, or change to something else that is streaming. That is a positive to me.

The dimension of the screen dramatically enhances the emotional draw of the movie, especially those that depict large-scale objects and events. When I see Godzilla, a spaceship, or a WWII battle at the movie theater, I feel dwarfed by their enormity. That is something I crave.

The sound systems of most film theaters I go to are vastly superior to anything I can afford.

While the presence of others can be a negative, it can be a huge positive as well. Watching a movie with a good audience is to home video as going to the stadium is to watching the game at home. In both cases, you are sharing a sensorial and emotional experience with a bunch of people at a venue dedicated to that event. That often enhances the experience. Even a good comedy is way more fun when the whole theater is laughing with you.

Oof. As someone that likes movie theaters I hate to hear that.
