Side note: I’ve always heard sexual offenses have a relatively low recidivism rate. Is that just because other crimes (e.g., robbery) may be crimes of circumstance/poverty, because rape isn’t reported/convicted as much, a combination, or is rehabilitating for rape genuinely easier? I’ll be honest, rape as a crime is so dangerous (I.M.O., worse than murder in many cases) that offenders should not be allowed back out.

And while sex crimes reflect a severe lack of empathy, murder reflects a much severer lack or complete absence thereof.

Recidivism for sex crimes is relatively low.

      • Rapists are added to the sex offender list, so people tend to be aware of them, and they’re subject to law enforcement scrutiny. It’s probably easy to have a rape report against an already convicted rapist taken seriously.
      • Sex crimes are also crimes of circumstance, like most crimes. Social maladjustment and being sexual victims themselves seem to be main contributors.
      • Therapy is relatively effective for sex offenders, who experience social maladjustment and cognitive distortions in empathy and thinking about their and others’ needs and motivations, social signals, etc.
      • Sex offenders tend to be young men and teens, who typically haven’t fully cognitively developed, are experiencing elevated sexual activity, are struggling with social adjustment—which seems to uniquely impact boys much more than girls, a product of toxic masculinity culture?—are handling alcohol poorly, etc.
