It also means absolutely nothing in terms of quality. Plenty of awful movies have gotten long standing ovations at Cannes only to come out and be awful.
I've been to plenty of festivals in my time. I've seen lots of applause, but never both 5 minutes and lukewarm at the same time. Maybe it's an European thing.

So it's a Cannes thing, a French thing, an European thing, or an every top festival thing? I'm just trying to imagine how an entire audience can be consistently lukewarm for 5 minutes straight lol...

In any case, maybe they shouldn't put the ovation runtime in the headline? Sounds misleading.
Venice is the only other festival with these long ovations, but it’s definitely more of a Cannes thing. 5 minutes is actually kind of the minimum. It’s a courtesy of “congrats you made a movie.”

It's not that the applause after the screening were lukewarm, it's that the broader critical world gave the movie lesser reviews after they are released widely.

For anyone else who was unclear about the order of operations from just the title, the standing ovation was after the credits ran, not before the movie was shown.

It’s not uncommon but Top Gun got a similar standing ovation and there’s a level of pedigree here that I think means good things.
Edit: Nevermind
Best I remember is BvS getting standing ovation.

Heres a list of long standing ovations at Cannes notably The Paperboy got a 15 minute standing ovation and went on to become critically derided.

Learned that today!
I mean I'm familiar with the "congrats you made something", but it's usually much much shorter!
Allegedly they also traditionally moo bad films at Cannes instead of booing them.

It must have been a very interesting moment. I never heard of a lukewarm 5 minute ovation before. Leave it to the French, I guess?
