This one stings. David Lynch is such a huge influence on me and the kinds of film and other forms of fiction that I enjoy and seek out. All you gotta do to get my attention is refer to something as "Lynchian" and that pretty much guarantees I'm going to check it out.
While the original series was hit or miss, Twin Peaks: The Return was probably the single most enjoyable TV watching experience I have ever had in my life (and Fire Walk With Me is basically my Roman Empire--I think about it way more often than seems healthy or normal).
Oh, sad news. Recent health updates pointed in this direction, but it is always a blow when the inevitable happens. For me the most important influence David Lynch had in film, was how he...
Oh, sad news. Recent health updates pointed in this direction, but it is always a blow when the inevitable happens.
For me the most important influence David Lynch had in film, was how he approached interpretations. Which basically came down to him saying, "I just made the film. You tell what it is about". I think that is generally a good way to watch movies with an intuitive mindset, not chasing to find the "right" takeaway or message.
I loved how much he stuck to that much to the chagrin of everyone who always wanted some clear or concise reading of his work. This is one of my favourite moments of his: "Eraserhead is my most...

Twin Peaks is basically built on the clichés of soap operas, and no one else could have pulled that off with what he did with that series.

Heartbreaking. I don't often find myself too saddened by celebrity deaths. They feel so far away, I don't feel much of a personal connection. But this one hurts, even if it was clear it was coming. I only relatively recently went through his filmography, but he quickly became one of my favorite directors. There's always such a clear vision being expressed, even when the actual film is being surreal and inscrutable. And Twin Peaks is a show without equal, for me.
I believe so. After the emphysema diagnosis, I figured it would probably be coming in the relatively near future. Hard to deal with at that age. But I'd heard more recently he had been struggling...

the only channel i ever followed and kept up with on youtube was his number off the day. Lynch was truly amazing with everything he did. So totally gifted with a unique vision and aesthetic.

His work is an acquired taste
And how! I recall watching Blue Velvet with a roommate at one point and he was saying things like "I don't get it, it's just a boring old movie." For me though, it's a nail biting thriller where the juxtaposition of this seedy underbelly living in harmony with this picturesque 1960's suburbia evokes this underlying dread that permeates the whole film.
One of my all time favourite directors! I can watch Lost Highway or Mulholland Dr. over and over again, without end. A rare treat for someone who can't watch most entertainment even one time. Very...

Very grateful for having had someone like him among us.
A shame, I enjoyed a few of his films and Twin Peaks was great! I first looked into him in my late teens when he interviewed Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins, my favourite band. I'd heard of...

Not to mention that many of his post-90s production seems to revolve around #MeToo etc.
This is something that's been giving me comfort. He was just so genuinely good, so kind, I'm not sure I've ever heard a bad word against him. In much the same way that his art may not be for...
This is something that's been giving me comfort. He was just so genuinely good, so kind, I'm not sure I've ever heard a bad word against him. In much the same way that his art may not be for everyone but is undeniably important, so too was his person.... You may be an ex-wife, but it was an incompatibility, not a cruelty that made it so.

Recently I finally had time to watch the new season of Twin Peaks. After that, I went a bit deep diving for fan theories. One thing I found is that Lynch was a guy with many interesting ideas, and frequently shared them in talks and interviews. 78 is a nice old age, and he produced wonderful art during his life, and so it was a life well lived.

I have a deep appreciation for his works. Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drives are some of my absolute favorite pieces of visual media.
Coincidentally, my girlfriend had ordered one of his books for me a few days ago. It will allegedly arrive today. She hasn't told me which one, but based on context clues from a conversation last night, I'm guessing it'll be Catching the Big Fish.

Offtopic and I feel like this must have been discussed before, but I don't remember it...why don't we do like ~entertainment.movies, ~entertainment.music, ~entertainment.tv, and ~entertainment.games instead of having those all be separate topics? That way like a movie based on a TV show or a David Lynch would have good places to be discussed without analysis paralysis over something pretty insignificant for people submitting the posts 😢

Had he been in particularly bad health recently? I hadn't heard anything about that so I was particularly surprised.

His work is an acquired taste but I think everyone can agree that it is undeniable that he was a visionary. RIP
