The goal for Disney, Netflix, Apple and company is to make physical media go obsolete. I hate to say this, but that’s where we’re headed. This comes a year after Best Buy announced that they would stop selling physical media in their stores, and only a month after Sony announced it will cease production of Blu-ray discs and other physical media.
That's a money making opportunity they're losing out on because they believe it will enable more control in the future of the media we consume. What I would do to go back to the days of picking out a DVD to buy and add to our collection at home. I would think a move like this would just make people turn to piracy.
I'm afraid Apple and the like will ultimately get their way with DRM protected everything. What's next on the chopping block? Physical books? Feels like we are already on our way there.
Apple paves the way with hardware, look at headphone jacks. I'm afraid they'll ultimately pave the way with this too.
You're absolutely right. Corps want total control of our media consumption. And they'll be celebrated by part of the population for doing it. I am so over it. There are decades and decades of...

There are decades and decades of media that I haven't seen, read, listened to, or played. I'll seek out physical copies of that stuff. I'm not buying into the way things are going anymore.
I'm past the point of caring. I'll pay to see it in the theatres and download the file to my NAS. Everybody gets theirs and the streamers can go fuck themselves.

I’m kind of out of outrage on this topic. There are 10 political disasters a day, so I don’t have room to worry as much about greedy rights holders. I guess if they don’t want me to watch this...

I've really gotten into physical media over the last couple years, and I'm at the point where if a show or film can't be legally purchased, I'll probably skip it. Once in a while I make an exception and buy a month of streaming to watch something specific, but that's been happening less and less. I don't think the streaming studios much care about outliers like me, and that's fine. I have no shortage of things to watch.
There's still a thriving marketplace of DVDs and Blu Rays. It's just all online.
I'm in a similar spot. I just started watching movies (more than maybe once a year) since Oppenheimer. But I've avoided streaming services entirely - if I can't watch it in a theater or buy it on...

There are dozens of us!
If they paid for it, they can choose how and where it releases. Seems fine to me.
