The Alamo was packed when I went to see it on Thursday, and the app has shown most of the showings over the weekend (every half hour) as being mostly full, so if you're not reserving seats a few days in advance like I did, you might not be getting in.
I liked it, as someone who was growing up with 2000s Spider-Man before the MCU thing happened. It seemed like a return to what Spider-Man is supposed to be, with a reduction in some of the MCU baggage and an emphasis on him spending years becoming New York City's superhero. It's a necessarily more personal story after the events of No Way Home, though sadly it's missing any of Spider-Man's iconic rogue's gallery still...but what they're setting up is intriguing.
Let's just say it fits with my expectation that post Doomsday/Secret Wars we are going to see a hard pivot into X-Men taking center stage with the Avengers having run their course...and they're going to update them to be some timely political commentary. Anti-mutant sentiment that fits the times more, with some ICE flavored fascism.
I also realized we have a chance that could set this Peter up to be the unluckiest Parker. His Uncle Ben died further in the past, so that got doubled up with the change they made in Brand New Day. He disappeared for five years in high school due to Thanos, and then everyone including MJ and his best friend forgot about him for five years while they went to college and he just did Spider-Man stuff. The things that happened in this film were really rubbing salt in that wound too. So they just need to introduce Gwen Stacy before he can get back together with MJ...
Also, Zendaya's going to be in three of the biggest movies of the year, and Holland in two: The Odyssey, this one, and Dune Part III. (Too bad neither of them ended up in Super Mario Galaxy.)
They’re probably gonna do Black Cat rather than Gwen Stacy.
So it actually did beat Endgame to have the biggest opening weekend domestically of all time
Worth noting that...
...but you know, those don't make for good headlines.
It balances out because overall attendance was higher in 2019 and Endgame had IMAX which Spider-Man didn’t. Technically the Wednesday screenings were just Early Access screenings and weren’t widely available. Although Spider-Man’s Thursday previews started at 12PM. Despite 3PM having been the norm post pandemic.
Eh, I'd argue that IMAX doesn't matter. It did make up a $90M chunk of opening weekend ticket sales, but people that want to see the movie aren't going to avoid it if they can't see it in IMAX.
I used to think it would be cool to see ticket sales count rather than gross.
That would be more accurate to judge the popularity of a movie.
But there's a lot of other things that affect that too. There are more people in the world than there were before. But also there are more entertainment options.
Nearly best Endgame DOM.
Crazy opening weekend. Especially since the main appeal of the movie is that it’s a street level Spider-Man film. Although No Way Home having been so big and there being a five year gap since we last saw Spider-Man helped. That’s the same gap from Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man. We also went from seeing Holland as Spider-Man nearly every year from 2016 to 2021 to having to wait five years.
ALSO, it helps that if you were a kid when Civil War and Homecoming came out you’re a young adult now. So you grew up with Holland as Spider-Man. He’s definitively the Spider-Man with how his movies have performed.
Yes Sony/Disney had me worried for a second if they would continue Tom Holland's Spider-Man or do yet another reboot. But it's looking like he'll get a lockdown on the role similar to Hugh Jackman's Wolverine which I'm all for!
Weekend BO includes Sunday, right? It's so the weekend in most of the world. Could get a last day boost lol
