Personally I think it cheapens the oscar brand. Does having a popular movie denote the same award as say most of the best pictures that have won?

Considering the politicking that goes into the awards in order to have them for marketing or career goals (or because they finally "deserve one after all these years") and the steady decline of movie theaters as watercooler talk or standard entertainment option (particularly with cord cutting and the rise of streaming video and quality episodic TV as well as other video entertainment formats) I don't know that the brand means much to the casual movie goer.

That was a really long sentence.

It doesn't mean much to me as a previous movie buff (8 year video store employee and film school drop out) and I'm hard pressed to find much of anybody these days who can remember who the best actor or actress was in the last few years. MTV movie awards were for the popular fun option for awhile and the Screen Actors Guild awards is still considered the more casual event but more meaningful to recipients since it's voted on by peers (and includes both critical and popular successes). With all of that... Oscar can probably just not be a thing anymore and nobody but Hollywood financiers would notice.

We're planning a more globally accessible, three-hour telecast.

This is the problem in a nutshell.

It's more than three hours if shitty acceptance speeches of no quality and time waiting for people to get on stage. Get the action shots of people's genuine reactions to winning/losing and then move on.

Then if you want to have actors/producer/whatever do anything, plan all those segments in advance so they're high quality.
