On the one hand, this is a disgrace to the craft of film. On the other hand, I’ve never watched the Oscars anyways, so I’m not exactly the target demographic.
I’ve never understood how film editing is evaluated for excellence – how can an outside observer know the difference between bad editing and the editor doing the best they can with a pile of garbage shots?
Award shows are primarily a political/marketing vehicle. I will say the Academy has more integrity than the Grammys, but I fully expect them to become just as tepid and meaningless over time. The Academy has always handed out a shit-ton of technical awards that aren't part of the main ceremony, mainly because it'd be boring as hell technical stuff to your average viewer. They do this in a separate time/place from the main awards and it goes on for hours minus all of the celebrities. This smells like a change just to cram more commercials into the broadcast to me. :P
