    More importantly, the idea that Chinese audiences are predisposed to reject a female-led superhero fantasy is disputed not just by Captain Marvel but by a host of recent major studio offerings.

    Yeah, this was always a bit of a silly assumption. Sexism exists in China, of course, but anime is extremely popular there, and it's a medium filled with female main characters. It has its own host of stereotypes and sexist tropes, obviously, but it makes it pretty clear that Chinese audiences aren't averse to female leads.
