This looks like exactly what I expected after Force Awakens: JJ Abrams loving fan service and putting it ahead of storytelling. The title alone seems to go against The Last Jedi's ideas of the direction of the series. Granted it is just a trailer, but with his track record, it seems fair to assume this is the case. That might be exciting for a lot of people, obviously, but I'm extremely disinterested as someone who liked The Last Jedi.

Push comes to shove and Star Wars is popcorn not haute couture. The movies exist for the fanbase (and their wallets), not to challenge them, not to deviate from the tried and true formula. They aren't going to follow TLJ after the extreme backlash it recieved.

I disagree that the average fan didn't like TLJ. I think it received a mixed response from the fanbase as a whole, but it's not clear to me what the average or even majority viewpoint is. Full disclosure: I loved TLJ, it's my personal favorite Star Wars movie.

Even still, I understand their desire, even though I disagree with it, to bring the fans back together in consensus and make a follow-up with broader appeal. But based on this trailer, I think they went too far, and it's going to make the sequels feel like a disjointed set of three movies rather than a cohesive trilogy.

But it's definitely too early to say for sure, and I'm optimistic that this will turn out different from how it seems today.

      Admittedly based on very little.

i think the title is in-line with The Last Jedi. Luke realized the flaws of the Jedi doctrine, now Rey will stand up a new order called Skywalker.

As someone who didn’t like TLJ, I think this looks great. There’s a sense of adventure in this that TLJ lacked.

Not a whole lot of stuff to say about the trailer, standard "It all ends here" stuff. The Rise of Skywalker is an interesting title, are the referring to a person, or a symbol or an ideal to rise to?

After the hype machine of TLJ trailers i would not take the hype again with any Disney content, going to wait until the movie is released and see the review of trusted sources.

That was rather uncalled for. There is no need to denigrate someone's choice to wait for reviews before seeing something or belittle them for it. Be nice.

I actually agree with the guy you replied to. It's ridiculous to wait for reviews first. Everyone is different and has different opinions on what makes a movie, game, album etc, good. Why wait for a bunch of randoms to review it? Watch it yourself and make your own mind up. It's like no one can think for themselves or make their own decisions anymore.

Do you not understand the purpose of a review? Most of the time people aren't looking at random reviews but others they've found with similar tastes. It just helps people know what might be worthwhile to watch. There's so much media out there not everyone can waste time watching every movie to make up their own mind.

Whether people agree or disagree with someone else is not the issue here and entirely beside the point; It's how disagreement is expressed that is.

Did anyone else find it strange that Rose was, as far as I can see, completely missing from this trailer?

She's been spotted with Daisy Ridley in some production shots. As far as we know she is still involved with the production.

She was an auxiliary character. I don't imagine a short teaser would need to have anything with her in it.

Return of The Jedi Part II: The Re-Jeding

In all seriousness, I have very low expectations for this movie. It was obviously difficult enough for JJ the first time without any input from Disney (something I actually do blame Disney for), and I predict he will not diverge from his action packed formulaic approach.

More to the point, I feel like what I disliked most about TLJ is that it set up the next movie for failure, primarily in the sense that it polarized the fanbase. There's no way JJ can make a compelling movie for TLJ haters and lovers while also finishing an entire trilogy.

On the one hand, I have zero faith in Abrams. Less than zero even. Also, I truly hate when death means nothing in movies and characters keep coming back after "dying". That said...Palpatine. Fuck...

100%. Under any other circumstances, I'd be properly exasperated about this. But Frank is BACK!

speaking as someone with next to no investment in the star wars franchise, this really looks like at best it's going to be a pretty unremarkable movie. not bad, but probably not good either, which feels like it should be unacceptable considering that it has the complete and absolute institutional backing of literally the largest media corporation on the planet.
