And now I'm also a millennial.

Honestly I'm completely okay with Lando getting his own movie. If some of the Rogue One guys are in it, even better! Glover is charismatic enough to carry his own movie, let him!

Yep, I thought he stole every scene he was in despite limited screen time and not amazing lines to deliver.

Man, for such a vast and cool universe as Star Wars is there seem to be only like, 12 important people in it. Rogue One worked (mostly) because it focused on characters we did not know doing something important in the background of the original movies. It expanded the universe by telling a new story. I get that studios worry that doing something "new" is a financial risk, but for God's sake this is fucking Star Wars. You slap those two words together at the end of a scifi trailer and you're gonna rake in the money regardless of who it focuses on.

While I don't dislike stories focusing on the classic characters, and I think that they've made progress with making the series less about the same people (e.g. having Rey not be a Skywalker/Solo/Kenobi/etc.), I do hope that they use future anthology movies to tell more stories that are different. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to see Solo this weekend and I'll definitely be pleased if the oft-rumored Obi-Wan movie is real, but I did like that Rogue One felt like something different and I hope that trend continues.

I've seen people refer to Star Trek as a franchise that can almost be thought of more as a setting than as a series, because it's at its best when it's used as a backdrop for telling stories of different genres. I think that the same can be true of Star Wars. I think what really drew me (and lots of others) into the old Expanded Universe was how it used the setting as the backdrop for lots of different types of stories. Off the top of my head, there were war stories, horror stories, stories about family, grand epics about the classic characters, retellings of the movies/other books from different perspectives, crime stories, and more. I'd really like to see Disney/Lucasfilm use the freedom that the franchise gives them (like you said, slapping "Star Wars" on a movie makes it pretty much a guaranteed box office success) to explore that side of the franchise more.

I would love to see a Band of Brothers-esque movie set during either the Clone Wars or the Madalorian Wars. Hell, I'd love to see the Old Republic get some movies. I know there's probably no way they could adapt KOTOR into film, but they could definitely borrow from those games and craft a similar narrative in the setting.

Could you imagine a horror style Clone Wars movie where a platoon of Clone Troopers are hunted predator style by some sort of Sith Assassin?

Or maybe a detective movie set on Coruscant?

I just want to see some creativity. Not just a backstory of known characters.

I'm still disappointed Star Wars 1313 never became a thing. It was a game where you played as a bounty hunter (eventually revealed to be Boba Fett it seems) and was set to have a mature rating from its inception. Was going to focus on the Coruscant underworld.

I believe the entire thing got scrapped when Disney ended up buying Star Wars and wanted to get rid of all EU material.

The detective thing reminded me of the Eisenhorn 40k novels, which he called 'domestic 40k', as they weren't on the battle front, and are among the best 40k.

I mean I watched the movies when I was a kid and the recent ones and the ones we don't talk about but I really don't understand the fans of that character.

I imagined that. Yes I only watched the main movies. My parents weren't big on pop culture and even the fact that we watched Star Wars or Back to the Future at the cinema really surprise me today :-/

Does that mean that they're trying to make up for doing away with all the material between the prequels and the sequels as non-canonical to appease people that were frustrated by that decision? Or is is just so Disney can have a monopoly on the extended universe where there used to be canonical novels, comics, and video games?

Probably the latter. Working with such a huge established canon can be annoying/expensive and simply retconning it opens up all sorts of possibilities for them in terms of exploring new ideas with established characters and settings so they don’t even have to consider accidentally contradicting something written about in the extended universe somewhere already.

And you know how us nerds can be about calling that shit out, too. :P For me that happens with Star Trek more than Star Wars though, which is why I despise the new Trek movies and show so damn much. I have watched all the old series 5-6 times now (TNG about 10 times) and even have some of the old technical manuals memorized so the new movies/show contradicting everything already established drive me nuts to the point that I can’t even really enjoy them at all.

Oh damn, I can't relate since I personally really enjoy the new Trek movies but that's probably exclusively because I've never watched the old series. I can't imagine having that much lore that you've come to know and love get tossed to the side and at best get a reference in a new reboot of the movies that are geared towards a larger audience.

Yeah, and it's also the fact that they have gone so far away from Gene Roddenberry's original vision of a more positive/optimistic future for humanity that makes it sting the most. The Trek movies were always geared towards a more general audience so that aspect doesn't bother me so much as them simply trodding over old ground, rather than coming up with something new, and contradicting established character's lore and personality traits.

However Star Trek: Discovery being so ridiculously dark, confrontation filled, violent and lacking any nuanced political/social commentary whatsoever... basically being utterly devoid of any trace of his vision feels like a massive betrayal. At least even with the movies being watered down us Trek fans had the shows to fall back on but now we don't even have that anymore. :(

But hey, at least we have The Orville now. It's far from perfect but it's close enough that I'll take it.

I mean, they have to do something to restore the expanded universe they so casually tossed out. Creating a new one might as well work.

This seems to be very topical, and we've been discussing the "growing emptiness of the Star Wars universe" over in this thread as well.
