The first time I went on a date, I went to see Forrest Gump at the cheap theatres. $6 total -- only because I dragged my best friend along with us. :)

it was perfect, actually. Long story short: I met the girl through friends and didn't know her very well, but all of my friends were pushing me to date her since she was into me. The 'date' was pretty tame. We went to the movie then back to her place where we met up with her twin sister. From there we did quizzes from those teeny bopper magazines... then we made the trek home.

I think we 'dated' for a whopping two months, mostly over the phone. At most I probably saw her once per week. She tried to claim... I think it was 'Interstate Love Song' by Stone Temple Pilots.. as 'our song', but I had the foresight to not associate a good song to what I would assume is an extremely temporary relationship. Instead of offered up the theme from that show The Heights -- a song I totally HATE, but is super sucky and what I assumed she'd be into. I was right and I kept the good track to myself.

This turned out to be a long story.

Anyway, the movie was great -- and I would say it was the best thing that came of that brief time. She was also the first person I tried to explain (in detail) what BBSs were and why they were so great. She wasn't sold (strike two!)

Nowadays I don't give a fuck about personal taste, there are many issues to address before I start worrying if a woman likes Stanley Kubrick or not...

However, I really need a partner to be into film, at least on an ‘it’s enjoyable’ level. My ex-wife mostly liked stuff like The Notebook and those dance movies. I cannot sign into that again :)

I think I was about 12 or 13 when Forrest Gump came out and I distinctly remember wondering "Is all the culture from now on going to be about old people being nostalgic about their teenage years in the 60s and 70s?" The whole movie struck me, at the time, as a long nostalgia wank for boomers even before I knew what a boomer was or even really understood how nostalgia worked.

And it turns out I was right. The boomer generation absolutely will not step aside and they will, in fact, burn this whole motherfucker down before they allow anything to puncture the narcissism bubble. They were the first generation with mass media and youth centered pop-culture and they never managed to develop an immunity to it.

I don't personally like the movie (it's dull, which is about the worst thing you can say about any film), but this interview is lazy, and inserts a political argument where there isn't really one to be had, I think.

On the other end of the spectrum, Gump (referring to character, not film) brought down Nixon, the film portrays virtually every soldier within as a dumbass (don't forget that it cripples one, kills another and wounds the rest), highlights the virtue of sharing, demonstrates how prostitution is bad but promotes treating them with the same golden rule you'd treat anyone with, etcetera; out of all of the complaints you have, claiming that the movie's cardinal sin is being apathetic or regressive is a really odd move.

it's apparently time for forrest gump to officially get critically reevaluated by people now that it's a quarter of a century old, so indiewire has had eric kohn take up the controversial banner of "forrest gump is a bad movie, actually" and be crucified by the film community for our sins. (the comments section on this, if you scroll down, is quite merciless in its raking of him)

I enjoyed the shit out of Forrest Gump and still do. However I was surprised to learn (as an Aussie) that it's supposed to be about looking at US modern history through some sort of storytelling lens. For me, Forrest Gump is about a dumb as rocks kid who has a mild super power and does a bunch of really interesting and funny things.

If you look at films like an arts major you'll become as miserable as an arts major, I suppose. Watch the funny moving pictures like they're just simple funny moving pictures and your quality of life will improve.

That doesn't sound like any film major I know :-P I've never seen one able to talk about a film using a single sentence before.

I can talk longer about movies, but I’ve never been the cerebral type. Movies are supposed to elicit many different reactions and emotional joy is just one of them - neither inferior nor superior to the others. Comedies should provoke amusement, horror should provoke fear and predominantly rhetorical works generally seek to induce reflection. This is not my first language but you get the gist. It’s not that complicated.

Bordwell proved, as well as you can prove something like that, that every genre elicits intense intellectual activity, shattering the notion that only brainy movies are cognitively stimulant.

But there’s pedantry in every field.

25 year anniversary reviews. Our increasingly scheduled public lives. What's on the agenda for this afternoon? Oh yes, Dolly the first cloned sheep's birthday number 23. If she was still alive.
