There's been a lot of controversy lately over Blizzard and the NBA being accused of sacrificing American values to please China, and there's been a low-level controversy over Hollywood self-censoring to be acceptable to the Chinese market (brought to the fore by a recent South Park episode skewering Disney and other American companies for doing this), but this is the first fallout I've seen that goes much beyond angry American fans.

What direction will things take in the future? Will American-Chinese co-productions get increasingly bold in pushing Chinese nationalist content? Will it be enough to cut certain scenes in certain regions or will Hollywood have to choose between a movie being acceptable for China or acceptable in south-east Asia, India, etc.? Will the American public care enough that these companies feel their bottom-line is being hurt in the domestic market?

Also, can we take a moment to appreciate how weird it is that the Nine-dash line made it into a Dreamworks' kids' movie?

Sidenote: Of course, American propaganda makes it into movies all the time. And there are plenty of movies filled with Chinese propaganda that don't cause a stir. The important difference here is this is an American movie with Chinese propaganda in it because it turns out Chinese propaganda is profitable.

Edit: Actually, I just remembered ESPN had a controversy like this not even a week ago. They showed a map of China that included Taiwan, the nine-dash line (technically the ten-dash version with an extra dash to explicitly encompass Taiwan), and part of India. Article here; not the most neutral tone but it shows the map and gives some good background info.
