This looks pretty interesting to me. I like that it seems they are taking this as a more serious movie and seem to be making some changes like toning down the comedy and changing Mushu into a pheonix.

Hopefully this is not just doing another boring straight remake, but woke, like Beauty and the Beast or Lion King. Though the inclusion of another female girl boss baddie gives me a little concern.

The soundtrack sounds awesome too. I love the cover of my Reflection used in the trailer here.

I don't understand why this would be concerning.

Because it exists only to give Mulan a female foil, instead of allowing her to be reflected by the male Hun leader, as she should be. Its an invented character that wasn't in the cartoon or the original story as far as I recall.

It also diminishes the entire point of Mulan. What she accomplishee is enhance by the fact that she is a woman. She isn't expected to be able to be a great warrior in 5th century AD. There are no female warriors in 5AD. Oh wait no the Huns have a woman too! Okay I guess its not that special.

It might work. The Hun witch might be a great addition to the narrative. It just seems forced.

In any case, the Huns are not there to be a foil to Mulan in the original either. I don't think that any of them are, really. It's largely a movie about finding ones place in the world. That's why there is so much imagry with reflections in the film.

Because to Disney, it seems that they feel that the only way to be a "woke" is to "fix" some of their dated gender tropes by adding in / making existing characters into strong independent girl boss types.

Like in Lion King they made Shenzi into a larger character and turned them into a girl boss for seemingly no other reason than to seem more woke. Disney also did something similar with Jasmine in Aladdin, Belle in Beauty and the Beast, or the daughter in the new Dumbo remake.

Basically instead of addressing any real criticism of their older movies in a meaningful way, they just throw in the smallest bit of strong women to the story and call it a day.

I linked it in my top comment, but I really highly recommend Lindsay Ellis' Woke Disney video as she explains it a lot better than I could - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xU1ffHa47YY.

It's weird, I don't think the women in their older movies were "weak" or anything.

Yeah, I think the Jasmine example in Lindsay Ellis' video is pretty stark on that point. The original Jasmine was already a very strong women who was not afraid to speak her mind. No one ever criticized the movie for her characterization. But for some reason Disney with the live action movie amped up her strong independent womenhood to eleven, talk a ton about how she wants to be the Sultan, and then even gave her a new song all about how she wont be silenced, which ironically was followed up immediately by her being captured.

But none of this is inherently bad, just different.

Disney now has a track record of some odd attempts at being "woke" (check out that video linked) with some of the additions they have made to "fix" up their classic stories. The linked video is a good overall coverage of Disney, but there's one specifically about Beauty and the Beast that goes more in depth about what happened in that movie's changes specifically.
