I think he's being a bit too harsh on the first Star Wars though. It's a good movie in its own right, not just because George Lucas got lucky.

Star Wars was saved in editing, and would have probably been a cult classic if it wasn't for John William's score and the incredible sound design.

Honestly I think the major difference is that back then, George wasn't full of his own ego and he listened to the people around him.

He really does strike me as a great creative mind that desperately needs a partner if not a boss. Someone who can tell him "no," or make him delegate certain jobs to people who know better.

What does that mean? Any movie would be bad if it wasn't edited. And I wouldn't consider good music and sound design luck. It was a collaborative effort, and even Geoge Lucas was good at his job.

@Amarok brings up a good point, that Star Wars succeeded in spite of Lucas. His team was able to polish and filter his worldbuilding down to something that works. You get the unfiltered experience when nobody said no to him, and it's pretty universally known as a poor experience. A lot of people who are into the Prequels are in because of the context of the Clone Wars cartoon, where once again, Lucas had a team and people who had to take his world and make it workable. When I said that bit about Editing, I meant it in that the Death Star firing on Yavin was added in post, because originally the rebels were going to sneak up on it. But the rebels having to disable it before it fired added a much needed clock, and made a slow script work alot faster. IMO, it could have been anyone who came up with Star Wars, Lucas just knew who to go to to make it a reality, and once he was the GOAT, and didn't have to work with anybody anymore, the work suffered.

What I meant by audio is that John William's score made Star Wars operatic, as compared to any other two-bit 80's sci fi synth fest. Were it not for that, it would have been an undiscovered gem. (also bought up and rebooted by Disney) ILM is just plain good at what they do, and the SFX is iconic. The atmosphere of Star Wars is amazing, but the story, the monomyth is just a small part of the equation that probably wouldn't have gotten attention on its own.

Kicked off quite a trend with that score, too. Remember Krull? Big fat star wars styled fantasy ripoff and yet, still fun and the epic score makes all the difference.

The movie would have been successful without George Lucas, but it wouldn't have been great. The story may be simple, but it's still really good. It is monomyth, but it's not like he just took a generic template and slapped space on it. He worked to make it fit properly. The Death Star, the space ships, the robots, the aliens, the Empire, the characters, most of those were his ideas, even if other people got them to work. He did a fine job at directing, too.

Not that I think he's a genius or anything.

I like that they mentioned the prequel apologists, that's one of the worst things the sequel trilogy is responsible for.

Personally I have not seen this movie, nor The Last Jedi, but at this point I'm kind of curious to do so just to see what kind of weird shit Abrams and everybody is getting into making these movies.
