You probably missed it because it initially came to theaters several months after Saving Private Ryan, which completely overshadowed it. IIRC, the success of SPR even forced them to delay the nationwide release of The Thin Red Line until the next year, but even that didn't help them much and it still kinda bombed despite being an excellent movie.

I can't really help you learn much more than that about it, but if you're looking for some other excellent WW2 movies that you also might not have seen, I could probably recommend a few. E.g. (paired up for fun ;)

Stalingrad and Enemy At The Gates. Both focused on the same Battle, but told from opposite perspectives (German vs Russian), and with Stalingrad being a far more realistic depiction.

Das Boot and U-571. Again, two depictions, one being far more realistic (Das Boot), and from opposite perspectives (German vs American), but this time focusing on submariners.

Grave of the Fireflies (one of the most heartbreaking movies I have ever watched) and Empire of the Sun (another Spielberg classic, with 12 year old Christian Bale in the lead). Again, two depictions from opposite sides (Japanese vs British), but this time focusing on the struggles of orphaned children during the war.

And I could also recommend a boatload of excellent (non-WW2) war movies, that barely anyone I know has seen, too. E.g. Off the top of my head: Tigerland (Vietnam), Waltz with Bashir (Lebanon War), Tae Guk Gi (Korean War), Gallipoli (WW1).

And yes, I watch a lot of war movies. ;)

Just fair warning on Grave of the Fireflies though, I am truly not exaggerating when I say it's one of the most heartbreaking movies I have ever seen. It's breathtakingly beautiful, but also totally emotionally devastating too. It's #1 on my "movies I loved but will never ever watch again" list. So make sure you're in a good enough mental state to handle it before you watch it.
