Homogenisation seems like the inevitable fate of anything optimising for mass market appeal. There will be one style that appeals to the most people. The only thing that has changed now is we have more music, more data, faster evolution cycles. So artists can all exactly hone in on what mass market is.

Of course the artist is free to have a song that switches from regular pop to something obscure and hardcore, but by doing so they are splitting their listener base by only targeting the intersection of people who like both styles of music.
