Wow lots of categories, lots of people and songs I've never heard of. I think one of y'all suggested Addison Rae to me based on me liking TSwift's Midnights, anyone a fan of these other newcomers?

This is the one award show that is impossible for me to predict since I don’t follow the industry much. But I’m thoroughly surprised that Justin Bieber got into Album of the Year

His new album is surprisingly good if you like his style of bedroom pop / "sexy time" R&B, which I actually do. ;) As a fellow Canadian, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Beiber too though,...

Lady Gaga's new album is way way better though, IMO, so I hope/expect she will take it.

I like Bieber’s 2010s music. Starting when he released Boyfriend. And I really liked his collabs with Skrillex and DJ Snake.

From his recent work I’ve only liked Peaches. Still though from what I understand Swag wasn’t that acclaimed or popular.

I'm personally not a fan of Bad Bunny's music, although I find him interesting as an artist and actor. Kendrick winning wouldn't surprise me though. The man is a genius, and his albums are consistently amazing quality. I've only listened to a few of the tracks from his latest album though, mostly just the ones that have popped up randomly in my feeds. I dunno why but he's not really my jam for some reason, even though I really enjoy listening to Political/Conscious Hip-Hop in general. E.g. I'm on another Run The Jewels kick lately, after seeing Killer Mike in a recent Amoeba video.

I’ve seen people critique Lamar as middle brow Obama-era hip pop. I love Bad Bunny, though I am Latino and like Latin dance music. He was surprisingly good in both Bullet Train and Caught Stealing.

Oof, that's a bit of a low blow. His lyrics are anything but middle brow, IMO, and I say that even as someone that's not really a fan of his actual music. His lyrics have always been objectively pretty deep, and his flow/cadence is top notch.

Agreed about Bad Bunny's acting though. I thought he was pretty badass in Bullet Train. :P I haven't actually seen Caught Stealing yet, even though it's on my watchlist. But TBH, I'm mostly interested in watching it because of the Doctor. ;)

That is an insane (and uncommon) critique of Lamar. Lowbrow/midwit type rhetoric is always a race to the bottom where people end up calling the other person's favorite artist dumb, so I'll just ignore that part. "Obama era hip hop" is just a weird sentence. In that his production has always felt contemporary, and not locked into a specific era of sound. Also the politics of his music are just "the blue", so it's not like he espouses dated cultural ideas that are irreverent to a listener of today. (Not that there should be much of a difference, given that the people old enough to listen to Kendrick were alive during the Obama era)

I think that race, full stop, has a lot to do with where the majority of critiques like that against Kendrick and his music is coming from. Especially after his Superbowl halftime show I noticed a loooot more shade being thrown his way from a particular crowd. :/

Yeah, I didn't want to openly assume anything, and I think that style of rhetoric is around in a lot genres and media (books discussion is really bad about it), but in the context of talking Kendrick Lamar, calling his stuff midbrow puts the accuser in the orbit of either disgruntled Drake stans or racists. Like you can't just say that without a lot more elaboration.

You and I seem to be on the same page, but to clear the air, I would like to explicitly state that I also do not think cloud_loud is racist. It is just that because Kendrick Lamar is so culturally relevant, you can run into dog whistle takes about his music that are espoused by the culture war machine that you wouldn't encounter when you look at other artists in the industry. For example, JID makes a similar style of music to Kendrick, but you wouldn't really see those types of criticisms highly platformed against him because only rap fans even know who he is.

Wild that Anxiety by Doechii is nominated so much considering how divisive that song is. But I suppose it's the only thing Doechii had this past year. I feel like I'm one of the few people that likes the song unreservedly, I was never into the original Gotye song that much to be too precious about the beat being lifted wholesale. Someone once told me it feels like just some bedroom experiment more than a fully thought through song and I got to tell them that the song literally is a bedroom experiment that's five years old, well before Doechii even had any industry attention.

If GNX wins Album of the Year, it'll be like Scorsese finally getting his Oscar with the Departed. But Clipse's Let God Sort 'Em Out is the better rap record, and I think even Kendrick would agree that that one deserves Best Rap Record over GNX considering the messaging, artistry, and pedigree behind it. GNX feels to me like a better version of DAMN. but also more of a "fun" record from Kendrick compared to his more lofty projects like To Pimp A Butterfly, Mr. Morale, and Good Kid, MAAD City. A lot of hip hop figureheads likened GNX to a mixtape than an album from him even though it probably is a better and more complete album package than most other contemporary rappers are able to put out.
