Just wanted to say last night I listened to Nirvana's Unplugged followed by Alice in Chain's Unplugged. We are very lucky to have those amazing performances recorded for all time.
Both from artists not at all in a good place. They are both incredible but they remind me of a moment I had with my son, who likes rather heavy music, when I went on a 90s grunge/alt/whatever binge one afternoon. He asked some questions and I paused a moment and had to say, yeah, a distressing proportion of these people are dead.
The best art seems to come from those who suffer the most, or I should say the art that I find speaks to me best seems to come from people suffering in some way or another. There is a quote I like that goes 'The darker the night the brighter the stars, the deeper the grief the closer to God'. Maybe those at the limits of the human experience are able to express something about the human condition that the rest of us can't quite put into words.

Listening to more jazz fusion this week:
Vista - DEZOLVE & 本田雅人 - Nice bright, high-energy track with a nice intricate rhythm and beautiful saxophone, courtesy of Masato Honda. I think in a previous post I'd mentioned how much this music just puts Mario Kart in my mind as that game series makes extensive use of jazz fusion music as well.
** AUTOBAHN - Casiopea** - A nice instrumental track with a nice crisp guitar combined with synthesizers. I love the melodic hooks and its overall energy.
From one Casiopea fan to another, I feel obligated to evangelize Sam Greenfield just in case you haven’t heard him. Active composer / saxophonist who channels the Japanese fusion scene in a big way while still managing to do his own thing. Some of his stuff errs on the side of being tongue-in-cheek but most of his stuff is just legitimately hard hitting fusion-adjacent stuff. Really big fan! This entire LP feels like a love letter to that entire genre.
Ninja edit: album opener is probably the least fusion-sounding on the whole album, weirdly misleading way to start it. Tracks 2-7 sound like they could come straight out of a Casiopea LP.
I've been on a bit of a riot grrl kick for a while now... in a roundabout way.
It started with Kim Deals solo album "Nobody Loves you more" which brought me back to The Breeders and The Amps and eventually back to Kathy Hanna and Bratmobile.
And then I found Amyl and the Sniffers who rule.
I wouldn't put Kim down as a Riot Grrl but Kathy is a given. And IMO Amy is as well.
I love hearing punk rawk that wasn't recorded in the 90's. Gives me hope for the future.
Check out Frenzee. They rock hard, if you get a chance to see them live do what you can to go. They'll rip your head off and you'll leave exhausted with a grin on your face. I saw them a couple of months ago, best gig in a while.

been listening to this cool death/thrash album by goetia, mortuary cult. it just came out a few days ago and it's a total ripper

I've been crook this week so not so much on the music but I had on some old Chris Wilson on this afternoon. Really good stuff if you like bluesy/folky singer songwriter type things.
I've had this cover of TV on the Radio - Wolf Like Me by Lera Lynn on repeat for a few days now. Very catchy.
