My favourite songs are Crutch, Charborg, and Shag.

There's a decent amount of new stuff on here for me but I'll only talk about a few.

Aerial Ballet is probably my new favorite album of the 60s, as weird as that feels to say. I always complained that outside of The White Album, The Beatles were never able to put together consistent or cohesive records, and while they're one of my favorite bands by sheer number of tracks I like, this never came out in how I rate albums. But I decided to give this a spin and it's someone else doing exactly what my ideal Beatles record would have been, with better lyricism than they ever had anyway. Mr. Richland's Favorite Song is also mine.

Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlots this is like a country themed Nick Cave / Gira album and I love it. This record makes me feel like I stumbled upon a masterpiece that just isn't intended for my taste, if that makes sense.

Walnut Whales is Joanna Newsom's first EP from a couple years before The Milk-Eyed Mender, and her inexperience as a vocalist shows. However, it turns out that her lack of control over her voice is actually incredibly cute and charming, making me actually prefer some of these recordings to the versions on her debut album! The songwriting expertise was already there too, making this still an incredible delight to my ears.

Prince s/t, Brian Wilson s/t and Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides all feel like nails in my ears and I hate them.

Most of my problems with it boil down to it being annoying and I don't want to listen again and put in the work to articulate that better. I actually wasn't sure if the record was getting genuine praise or if it was a meme like all the 10/10 reviews for You'll Cowards Don't Even Smoke Crack.

It also sounds oddly dated. Not to say that I can name something which sounds just like this, but it seems like it would fit more snugly into 2012- 2015 than 2018. I think I could've given it a pass because there was a lot of stuff that was just trying to push that kind of aesthetic forward through the whole vaporwave thing, artists like Grimes, etc. but that alone doesn't do anything for me now.

I think there's a lot of genuine praise. I'm certain there's probably meme praise also, as her aesthetic is more than a little eccentric, but I honestly think that SOPHIE made a fantastic album that makes a solid artistic statement on the concept of self and what it means to be real vs artificial. Tinymixtapes had one of my favorite reviews of the album that says words better than I ever could. Quietuss has a good one as well.

You should really try to give it another listen!

Parquet Courts - wide awake! I cant stop listening to this album. I listened to it once when it came out and was impressed but finally returned to it after a month and it just clicked. So many cool influences and sounds on the album.

Busdriver - a bunch of his albums I like rap and hip hop but really dig the alternative stuff. I just found out about Busdriver today after listening to the new Death Grips again and then kinda bounced around the discography. Some really fast, intelligent lines in his music. Probably going to check out all his related artists to try to find more like this.

Pissed Jeans - Why Love Now if you have, even the faintest interest in heavier punk, listen to this fucking record. It’s without a doubt one of their best. Their music will sound familiar to anyone who listens to sludgey punk, but their lyrics are absolutely cutting and musically they do some really interesting stuff, especially if your a fan of guitarists like Greg gin or anything like that.

Death Grips - Year of the Snitch not sure what to say about them that everyone ever has said. They make weird and intriguing music. While I don’t personally think it has as many bangers as their other albums, they definitely put out their best cohesive album with YotS. The whole thing flows really well. If you haven’t listened to them, I wouldn’t start with this album but it shows they still can make interesting music.

Jeff Rosenstock - I look like shit I love everything this man does. He has influenced my own music in so many ways and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of anything he’s put out. This might be my least favorite record between ASOB, BtMI and his solo stuff but, that being said, I still love everything on it. If you like anything punk you probably have heard his stuff before. He can be polarizing but the dude is probably my favorite musician ever.

Edit: And now YOTS will be sharing my time at the gym with this Pissed Jeans album.

The band Moon Hooch appeared twice in my Discovery playlist, and I decided to give them a good listen. The same day I found out that they were having a concert in my town that very night.

I went to the concert alone, which I very rarely do, and had an absolute blast! Going alone to the concert, and really getting into the music, without having to “look after” anyone was very fun!

The band was great, and I’ve listened to their music a lot since.

If you want an introduction to them, look up their tiny desk concert.

Bowery Electric - Beat - Shoegaze album where Bowery Electric didn't have a drummer, so they scrounged up a bunch of old hip-hop records and they ended up with hip-hop drums and beats underneath an ambient and hazy shoegaze sound. Incredibly interesting listen.

Lorde - Melodrama - I dunno, I just didn't get it. Just came off as kind of boring, nothing in specific annoyed me, I was just disinterested.

The Flaming Lips - Hit to Death in the Future Head - Turns out the Lips made some noisy shoegaze early on that I didn't know about. Not really that good, not really bad either.

Gorillaz - The Now Now - Just listened to the leak, won't talk about it just in case anyone here is waiting for the real release.

Coil - ...And the Ambulance Died in His Arms - Not one of the wildest Coil releases, but definitely the saddest. John Balance sounds like he's about to give up on life up on stage and he just sounds incredibly out of it for the majority of his parts. The ambulance improv part is incredible.

I've been on a huge Incubus kick lately and I recently decided to listen to their album Make Yourself in its entirety. That album is definitely a 9/10 and one of my top 10. The message of that album is such an important and fantastic one and every song sounds different and full of that Incubus flair. When It Comes is super fun to listen to and the bass line on Nowhere Fast is so damn good. I actually sat down and learned the entirety of it in one night. IMO, Incubus had one of the greatest 3 consecutive albums. S.C.I.E.N.C.E, Make Yourself, and Morning View are all fantastic.

I've been stuck on Unknown Mortal Orchestra's Sex & Food for a while recently. Here are some of my favorite songs from it:

    • Major League Chemicals - the main guitar riff with the rotating organ feels like a lot of 70's music to me (not that I was there for any of it), and I love it
    • Chronos Feasts on His Children - after the Nerdwriter's video on the painting, this song's lyrics feel a little weird, but the harmony and classic UMO chord shapes are great here
    • American Guilt - the riffs here really do a good job of describing the frustration of the lyrical topic
    • If You're Going to Break Yourself - this can feel a little repetitive, but it's just a super mellow track

Having seen this, I realize I didn't get around to posting in last weeks thread. Oops!

Shpongle — Tales of the Inexpressible

It's been a while since I've been Shpongled, and after the weekend I had last I think it's appropriate to revisit. I chose this album because it contains Around The World In A Tea Daze, which was my introduction to Shpongle.

Uakti — Philip Glass: Aguas Da Amazonia

Philip Glass is always a good time. This is great music for working. I personally love the instrumentation here.

Botanical Fortress — Precious Moments: Audio Healing Series Vol. 1

Kinda neat psych jam group from Detroit that my coworker showed me. Kind of reminds me of Sun City Girls, in a way. Or maybe that's just weird jam bands in general.

    Zammuto — Zammuto

This guy was in The Books. Glitchyish experimental rock. Fave track: F U C3PO

    Tommy Guerrero — Perpetual

Some interesting instrumental guitar through a bunch of reverb. It's nice but I'm not sure it holds up to repeated listens.

    SOPHIE — OIL OF EVERY PEARL'S UN-INSIDES

I've been following SOPHIE for a few months now, and I'm glad I did because I think this album is phenomenal. I listened to it at least 7 times the day it came out! I think this is an album that succeeds in exactly what it set out to do — shake up the pop music scene. I can't wait to see what SOPHIE will do next.

Slothrust — Show Me How You Want It To Be

An album of covers in a surprisingly good rock style. I really like the cover of Happy Together that's on here, I think it gives a totally different tone to the song.
